Beautiful hand made bell pull loaded with Norwegian folk imagery!
Vintage, likely hand stitched and finished within the last 40 years, likely from a mass-produced kit.
Wool yarn cross stitched onto a grid base.
Rust, copen blue, olive green, black, white, oatmeal, cream.
Lined with cotton.
Metal scroll hangers on each end resemble hand forged work.
Unsigned.
Immaculate condition: no missing stitches, no fading, no wear. Excellent, even stitching.
Measures 37" long X 6" (panel). The metal hangers are 8.5" wide.
Bell pulls became popular in Scandinavia during the 19th Century for folks who had servants, and were a signifier that one had "made it." They remained a popular gift of wall art for newlyweds well into the 20th century, and had a revival during popular interest in ancestry during the US Bicentennial. The imagery on this one is of much earlier provenance and draws from Nordic mythology and folk tradition.

These represent that she is the one who creates or bears, or is the flowering branch. The man stands beneath her in traditional groom garb, between two brown staffs. This suggests he is the one who maintains solidity and strength of wood to support her and the family. The black and white pattern of her apron shows she keeps everything in balance within the household. The star figure confers blessings and displays the highest intention for their keeping home together, while the star/flower emerging from the pot below shows they are in couple in growth and abundance.
